Do’s for East-Facing Homes
Follow these Purv Mukhi Vastu guidelines to make the most of natural light, for fresh energy, and positive flow throughout the day.
Keep the east side light and open.
Make sure you keep the east side of your home clutter-free. You can set up a small sit-out area, a garden or big windows for maximum benefits. As per window direction vastu, having large windows in the east wall brings in early sunlight, which is great for mood and energy.

Place the main door slightly towards the northeast.
As per Purv Mukhi Vastu guidelines, this is the auspicious entrance zone. If it’s possible, plan your main door in the northeast. This welcomes positivity, clarity and opportunities.
Let the person cooking face east.
Your kitchen should be in the southeast corner. When the cook faces east while preparing food, it’s considered ideal for good health and harmony.
Use the northeast corner as a prayer or silence zone.
The northeast corner holds calming energy. Even if you don’t have a formal pooja room, use this spot for quiet thinking or meditation. Lighting a small ghee lamp or diya in the northeast corner is considered highly auspicious.
Master bedroom goes in the southwest.
In an east-facing house, the master bedroom should be placed in the southwest direction. This offers stability and helps the head of the family feel more in control and less scattered.
Stick to soft colours on the walls.
For an east-facing house, white, pale yellow, cream, beige, or soft green works the best. They reflect light and keep the mood light and fresh.
Build staircases in the south or west.
As per Purv Mukhi Vastu guidelines, it is better to avoid placing a staircase in the northeast. It is because staircases in that zone can cause energy blocks and frequent obstacles in life.
Place heavy furniture in the southwest.
The rule is to keep the north and east sides of your home lighter. So, if there’s any storage or heavy furniture, place it towards the back (southwest) of the home.
Put overhead tanks in the southwest.
For water elements like borewells or small fountains, the northeast is a great spot. But for storage tanks, like water tanks, stick to the southwest corner. Storage tanks in the northeast create a heavy, suppressed energy that affects your mental clarity.

Maintain a lower level in the east.
If your east-facing home has elevation changes, let the east and north sides be slightly lower than the south and west. This creates a balance and harmony at home.
The do’s for an east-facing house as per Purv Mukhi Vastu guidelines include placing the main door in the northeast, keeping the east side open, setting the kitchen in the southeast, and having the master bedroom in the southwest. Light wall colours and big east-facing windows are also recommended to allow natural sunlight and energy flow. |
Don’ts for East-Facing Homes
Ignoring Vastu don’ts in an east-facing house can lead to blocked energy, stress and constant restlessness.
Avoid toilets in the northeast.
Having a toilet in the northeast can create mental unrest and long-term health issues. This is one of the top things to avoid in any Vastu layout.
Don’t block the east side with bulky furniture.
If you have heavy furniture, like a sofa, a cupboard, a bookshelf, etc., on the east side, remove it. It is because heavy objects against the east wall can block light and freshness. Let this side breathe.
No kitchen in the northeast.
Fire in the northeast corner causes tension and frequent arguments. Make sure to avoid it at any cost. If your kitchen is already in the northeast direction, scroll below to know the Vastu remedies.
Don’t put mirrors on south-facing walls.
This is one of the most common Vastu mistakes in the east-facing house. Never place your mirror on the south-facing walls. They reflect restlessness and heat. Use them on the north or east walls instead.
Avoid using dark colours.
Avoid dark colours, like black, deep red, and dark greys, for your east-facing house. These colours make your room feel heavy. They also absorb light instead of reflecting it.
Don’t keep broken or dirty items near the entrance.
Whether it’s a shoe rack, a dustbin or anything that’s damaged, do not keep it near the main door. The entrance should be clean and welcoming. You can have plants instead.
Avoid having a cut in the northeast corner.
If your plot or home has a missing northeast corner, it’s considered a serious flaw. You will need to balance it using mirrors or plants, as per Purv Mukhi Vastu guidelines.
Don’t ignore the signs your home gives you.
If you feel stuck, dull or agitated all the time, your home might need small energy corrections. Do not ignore the signs and take expert advice to help realign your home as per Vastu guidelines.
The don’ts for an east-facing house as per Purv Mukhi Vastu guidelines include avoiding placing toilets and staircases in the northeast, kitchen in the northeast, and using dark colours or heavy furniture on the east side. Overhead tanks should not be in the northeast, and the main entrance should remain clean and cluttered. |

Vastu Dosh Remedies for East-Facing Homes
Here are the Vastu dosh remedies for a few Vastu errors in your east-facing homes.
- Toilet in the northeast?
If your toilet is in the northeast, place a bowl of sea salt and change it weekly. You can also keep indoor plants, like areca palm or money plant, nearby to reduce the impact.
- Staircase in the northeast?
If you have a staircase in the northeast, hang a mirror on the northeast wall (make sure it doesn’t reflect the staircase) and keep the zone well-lit. You can also use a copper pyramid under the lowest stair for correction.
- Kitchen in the northeast?
If your kitchen is in the northeast, place a small bowl of water near the stove to balance fire and water elements. Cooking while facing east still helps neutralise the imbalance.
- Overhead tank in the northeast?
If your storage tank is in the northeast, paint the tank light blue and place a copper strip around its base. It’s better to consult a Vastu expert for a more specific solution based on your house’s layout.
