1. Set AC to 24–26°C and Use Ceiling Fans

Running the air conditioner at 20°C may seem appealing in summer, but it leads to unnecessary electricity use. Keeping the temperature at 24–26°C, the comfort range recommended by India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency, reduces consumption without compromising comfort. Pairing the AC with ceiling fans improves air circulation and helps maintain a pleasant indoor environment.

Even with a regular AC, this habit remains one of the most effective energy saving tips for apartments.

2. Do Laundry in Full Loads on Cold Cycles

Washing machines consume extra power when heating water. Cold water cycles are usually sufficient for most clothes, and they also help fabrics last longer. Running full loads instead of several smaller ones saves both water and electricity.

If your local electricity board offers time-of-day tariffs, try operating the machine outside peak hours. It is a simple way to save power in Indian homes without changing your routine significantly.

3. Unplug Chargers and Electronics When Not in Use

Devices such as phone chargers, routers, and televisions continue to draw power in standby mode. This “phantom load” can account for a noticeable portion of your monthly bill.

An easy solution is to unplug chargers once you are done or connect multiple devices to a power strip that can be switched off at once. It is one of those energy saving tips that delivers results quietly but consistently.

4. Maximize Natural Light and Ventilation

Apartments in India usually receive ample daylight, but many households still depend on artificial lighting during the day. Placing workstations and dining areas near windows reduces the need for electric lights. Light-colored walls and curtains further brighten up spaces naturally.

When you do need artificial light, choose wisely. Understanding LED vs CFL energy consumption helps you decide which is best for each room. LEDs work best in high-use areas, while CFLs can be used in less frequently occupied spaces.

5. Cook Smarter in the Kitchen

Cooking is another daily activity where energy use can be reduced with small adjustments. Use lids on pots to retain heat, prepare meals in batches to avoid repeated reheating, and consider using induction cooktops which heat faster and waste less power.

These simple steps may seem minor, but together they become effective energy saving tips for apartments.

6. Schedule Water Heater Use

Water heaters, or geysers, are among the highest energy-consuming appliances in Indian homes. Most can heat water within 10–15 minutes, yet many people leave them running much longer.

Switch on the geyser only when required, and turn it off immediately after use. If you often forget, set a reminder or use a plug timer. Over time, this habit can noticeably save power in Indian homes.

7.  Service Appliances Regularly

Appliances that are not maintained properly work harder and consume more power. AC filters, refrigerator coils, and geyser elements should be cleaned and serviced at regular intervals.

Even older appliances perform more efficiently with basic upkeep, making this one of the most practical energy saving tips you can follow.

8. Track and Adjust Your Consumption

Many Indian cities are introducing smart meters that provide real-time information on household energy use. These allow you to see exactly which appliances consume the most.

Even without a smart meter, reviewing your monthly electricity bill helps identify unusual spikes. Monitoring usage makes saving electricity measurable rather than guesswork.

9. Integrate Small-Scale Renewable Energy

Solar energy is becoming increasingly accessible for apartments. Rooftop solar panels, compact solar water heaters, and hybrid solutions are supported by government incentives in 2025, making them affordable for many households.

Even partial adoption reduces dependence on the grid and cushions you against rising energy prices. This is one of the more forward-looking energy saving tips for Indian homes.

Bonus: Smarter Tech for Apartments in 2025

Along with lifestyle changes, modern technology can further increase efficiency:

• Install Smart Alexa Enabled Switches – These allow you to schedule usage, cut standby power, and control appliances remotely. They are particularly useful for geysers and ACs.

• Optimize AC Usage with Smart Inverters – New inverter ACs use AI features to adjust cooling based on occupancy and outside weather.

• Choose Energy-Efficient Appliances – 5-star-rated refrigerators, washing machines, and geysers use far less power. Many models now include energy tracking.

• Upgrade to Smart LEDs – Modern LEDs offer dimming, scheduling, and app control. When comparing LED vs CFL energy consumption, LEDs clearly deliver greater savings in the long term.

Conclusion

For apartment living in India, saving electricity in 2025 is about a balance between maintaining comfort while reducing energy waste. Adapting small habits over time makes a real difference.
