12 Recycled Glass Decor Items for Your Home

Have you ever considered what to do with old jars and bottles rather than throwing them away? Let me tell you about some of the sustainable glass design ideas I've seen or tried.

1. Glass Bead Curtains

These are decorative curtains made of small recycled glass beads strung together. They can act as room dividers, window treatments, or doorway accents. The beads catch the light beautifully, creating a sparkling effect. I’ve seen them in living rooms where sunlight hits perfectly, making the space feel whimsical and airy. You can generally find them at craft fairs, tiny independent stores, or even create one yourself if you have access to heat and mould glass.

2. Glass Bowls

Bowls are a simple item. Some have a smooth edge, some have wavy edges. You can serve fruit, snacks, or even use it as a small tray for coins or keys by the front door. I once saw a friend fill a bowl with water and floating tea lights for a party; it looked really magical. If you’re feeling creative, some glass studios let you blow your own bowls. It’s messy, but you end up with something you can’t buy anywhere.

3. Drinking Glasses

You know those heavy, colored drinking glasses? Many of them are actually made from recycled bottles. They’re fun because each one feels a little different in your hand. I use mine for water or juice, and friends always comment on the colours. If you want to DIY, you can buy a kit that safely cuts bottles into glasses. Just be careful with the edges and sanding.

4. Pendant Lights from Glass

This is my favourite. A pendant light hanging from the ceiling, constructed of melted bottles. The glass softly glows, particularly if it's green or blue. I have spotted a kitchen with three varying pendent lights like this, and it warmed the room and made it cosy. To purchase them, look for local lighting manufacturers or eco-friendly glass decor shops. Some even allow you to choose the shape or colour.

5. Glass Candle Holders

These are so simple but make evenings feel special. Tiny recycled glass jars or the bottoms of bottles can hold tealights or small candles. The glass bends the light in interesting ways. My sister puts a few on her balcony at night, and it feels like a little fairy garden. If you’re crafty, you can even paint or etch designs on the glass.

6. Glass Jars

Jars are everywhere and easy to use. You can store snacks, tea, or even office supplies in them. Some people use them as mini planters or put fairy lights inside. I’ve tried that on my nightstand, and it looks really soft and calming at night. You can get them at craft stores, flea markets, or just upcycle your old jam jars.

7. Glass Bottle Wind Chimes

Wind chimes made from recycled glass bottles are not only musical but also decorative. Each bottle produces a different tone when the wind blows, creating a soothing melody. I’ve seen a balcony adorned with colorful glass wind chimes, and it felt magical when they tinkled together. You can make them yourself by cutting bottles and hanging them with string or purchasing handcrafted sets from artisans.

8. Mosaic Mirrors

These are mirrors with frames made of tiny recycled glass pieces. They catch the light in a really fun way. My aunt has one in her hallway, and it makes the whole place feel brighter. You don’t need to cover the whole frame; mixing in wood or metal with the glass pieces gives it a relaxed, casual vibe.

9. Glass Serving Platters

Serving platters made from recycled glass are not only for food. You can use them to display candles, shells, or little trinkets. Some are handmade recycled glass items, which makes them feel personal. A friend of mine uses one as a centrepiece on her coffee table with some candles and flowers on it, and it looks way nicer than anything store-bought.

10. Garden Orbs of Glass

These are big, round balls of thick recycled glass decor items. You put them in gardens or yards, and they catch the sunlight beautifully. My neighbour has a few blue ones in her flower bed; they reflect light and almost look like little gems. You can also hollow them slightly and add solar lights inside for a soft nighttime glow.

11. Wall Art Panels

Recycled glass can also be made into panels for walls. Some are abstract, others have simple shapes like waves or leaves. I’ve seen people put one behind their sofa, and it becomes the first thing you notice in the room. You can get them from local artists or even try smaller DIY panels using crushed glass and moulds.

12. Handmade Sculptures

Finally, sculptures. These are the most artistic pieces, like small animals, waves, or abstract shapes. Every single one is different because the glass flows differently every time it’s melted. I have a small wave sculpture on my shelf, and it catches sunlight in a way nothing else does. They’re sold at artisan fairs or galleries, and if you’re lucky, you can try making one at a glass studio.
