What is Maharashtrian Home Design?

Maharashtrian home design is a style of decorating homes that comes from the state of Maharashtra in India.

It uses simple yet colourful decorations that make the house look warm and lively. It is about using traditional things that families have used for many years and mixing them with today’s simple home needs.

The style is not too fancy or expensive. It is full of life, natural colours, and handmade things that make your home feel special and personal.

1. Colours and Fabrics

Colours play a major role in setting the mood of a Maharashtrian home. Traditionally, bright colours like red, yellow, green, and orange were used because they bring positive energy and joy.

These colours are now often balanced with neutral backgrounds like white or cream to create a calm and inviting atmosphere.

Fabrics in Maharashtrian homes are rich in texture and meaning. Sarees such as Paithani and Nauvari, known for their intricate weaving and vibrant colours, inspire the choice of textiles for curtains, cushions, and table linens.

Tips to Follow:

• Use bright cushions or pillow covers in red, mustard, or green.

• Add a soft white or cream-colored curtain with a colourful border.

• Place hand-woven rugs with simple patterns on the floor.

2. Furniture: Simple and Natural

The furniture in Maharashtrian decoration is often crafted from natural materials like wood and cane. This approach creates an organic, warm environment that feels connected to the earth.

Unlike modern flashy furniture, Maharashtrian pieces focus on durability and timelessness. Simple wooden chairs, tables, and shelves offer functionality without overwhelming the space, making rooms feel open and cozy at the same time.

Traditional pieces such as the wooden swing, or jhula, are not just furniture but symbols of relaxation and family bonding.

Tips to Follow:

• Choose light brown or natural wood colours.

• Use old wooden boxes or trunks as storage or tables.

• Place a small wooden jhula or bench in the living room or balcony.

3. Decorative Items

Handcrafted decorative items give Maharashtrian homes their unique character. Warli art, a tribal painting style from Maharashtra, uses simple white lines on dark backgrounds to tell stories about nature and everyday life.

Torans, or decorative door hangings, are more than just the decor. Brass and copper items such as small lamps, bowls, and bells are traditional staples. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these metals are believed to purify the air and invite auspiciousness.

Tips to Follow:

• Hang a Warli art painting near the entrance.

• Use a colourful toran on your main door or pooja room.

• Place a small brass diya on the dining table or shelves.

4. Pooja Room: The Heart of the Home

Traditionally, the pooja room is kept simple, clean, and full of natural elements to promote peace and focus.

Using wooden shelves or cupboards enhances the connection to nature and tradition, while brass lamps and incense holders add sacredness through light and scent.

Tips to Follow:

• Use wooden shelves or a small wooden cupboard to keep idols and holy books.

• Decorate with fresh flowers or garlands.

• Use oil lamps or incense holders made of brass.

5. Kitchen and Dining

The kitchen in Maharashtrian home design is not just a place for cooking but a hub of family bonding and tradition. Incorporating traditional clay pots or brass containers connects the kitchen to natural materials.

A wooden dining table with simple chairs invites family and friends to gather comfortably. Using colourful trays and hand-painted plates during meals brings a festive feel.

Tips to Follow:

• Decorate the kitchen walls with small paintings or cloth hangings.

• Keep fresh herbs like coriander or mint in small pots on the windowsill.

• Use traditional utensils like brass cups or plates for special occasions.

6. Flooring and Walls

Flooring and wall treatments can make or break the feel of a home. Terracotta tiles and wooden flooring are popular in Maharashtrian homes because they are natural, durable, and help regulate indoor temperature.

Walls are typically kept in light, neutral colours like whites or creams to create a calm backdrop. To add character without overwhelming the senses, many homes feature one wall painted with Warli art or decorated with simple fabric or bead hangings.

Tips to Follow:

• Choose terracotta tiles or wooden flooring for a natural, cool, and earthy feel.
• Keep walls light-colored with whites or creams for calm and peace.
• Add a single feature wall with Warli art or simple fabric hangings to add culture without clutter.

8. Bringing Nature Inside

Plants have always been integral to Maharashtrian home design, symbolizing life, growth, and freshness. Including easy-care indoor plants such as money plants, aloe vera, or tulsi in your home not only improves air quality but also adds a vibrant green touch that relaxes the mind.

Using clay or brass pots to hold plants maintains the traditional aesthetic while keeping the environment healthy. Natural fiber hanging pots or wooden plant stands further enhance the connection to nature, making your home feel lively and refreshing.

Tips to Follow:

• Place easy-care plants like money plants, aloe vera, or tulsi in your home to add freshness and clean air.

• Use traditional clay or brass pots for a classic look that fits the Maharashtrian style.

• Try hanging pots made of natural fibres or wooden stands to bring nature into corners and balconies.

7. Lighting: Soft and Warm

Soft, warm lighting is essential for creating the welcoming atmosphere found in Maharashtrian homes. Instead of harsh white lights, warm yellow bulbs or traditional oil lamps are used to bathe the room in gentle light.

Brass or clay lamps and candles add a flickering, calming effect that soothes the senses. This type of lighting invites relaxation and togetherness, making it perfect for evening family time or festive occasions.

Tips to Follow:

• Use warm yellow bulbs instead of harsh white lights for gentle and cozy illumination.

• Add brass or clay lamps and candles to create a soothing, flickering glow.

• Light your home with soft lamps during evenings and festivals to invite warmth and togetherness.
