Protecting Different Areas of Your Home from Holi Colours

The colours used during Holi, especially chemical-based ones, can leave stubborn stains on walls, furniture, carpets, and more. Here’s how to protect different areas of your home from hard-to-remove Holi colours.

1. Walls (Use Washable or Oil-Based Paint & Anti-Stain Varnish)

Walls are one of the most affected areas during Holi. If they are not well protected, colours can spread and leave ugly stains. Follow these steps:

• Apply washable or oil-based paint: These types of paints allow easy cleaning and prevent colours from sticking permanently.
• Use an anti-stain varnish: If oil-based paint is not applied to your walls, then go for a transparent varnish layer over painted walls. This adds extra protection and makes it easier to wipe off stains.
• Cover walls: If possible, temporarily cover walls with plastic sheets or old bedsheets where people will be playing.

2. Furniture (Cover and Protect from Colour Splashes)

Wooden furniture can easily absorb colours which makes it difficult to clean them later.

• Cover furniture with old bedsheets or plastic covers: This prevents direct contact with Holi colours.
• Use removable sofa covers: These can be washed easily after the festival.
• Move lightweight furniture away: If possible, shift sofas, chairs, and tables away from the playing area.
• Use stain-resistant sprays: A protective spray on fabric surfaces prevents colours from spreading.

3. Carpets and Curtains (Prevent Stains with Protective Measures)

Carpets and curtains are highly absorbent and can trap Holi colours deeply. Following are some of the preventions:

• Roll up or remove carpets and rugs: If possible, store them in a safe place before Holi begins.
• Use plastic sheets or old bedsheets: Cover fixed carpets and curtains with protective layers.
• Spray a fabric protector: This makes cleaning easier if colours do get on them.
• Opt for dark-coloured curtains: If removing them isn't an option, use darker shades that won’t show stains easily.

4. Bathroom Knobs (Prevent Stains with Petroleum Jelly)

Bathroom knobs and handles often get stained when people wash off holi colours. One can do the following:

• Apply petroleum jelly: A thin layer on knobs prevents colour from sticking.
• Keep a dry cloth handy: Encourage family and guests to wipe their hands before touching knobs.

5. Electronic Appliances (Keep Them Safe with Platic Covers)

Electronic appliances like TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines can get damaged if colours seep into their surfaces.

• Cover appliances with plastic sheets: This prevents direct exposure to colours and water.
• Keep appliances away from the play area: If possible, move smaller gadgets to a safer location.
• Use a dry microfiber cloth: Gently wipe colours off electronics with a dry cloth to avoid moisture damage.

6. Windows and Doors (Use Anti-Stain, Removable Covers)

Windows and doors are common areas where colours can accumulate and stain fabrics or glass.

• Close windows properly: This prevents colours from coming in from outside.
• Apply a protective polish: A layer of furniture polish or wax can create a barrier against stains. If you have uPVC, you can easily clean it with a cloth. To order uPVC windows and doors, click here.
• Spray a temporary anti-stain coating on windows: A clear spray prevents colours from sticking, making cleanup easier.

7. Flooring (Protect Stains on Tiles and Marble)

Holi colors can penetrate porous flooring and leave stubborn stains, particularly on marble and tiles.

• Apply sealant: Sealant creates a barrier against harsh Holi colours, which makes it easier to clean.
• Use floor coverings: Cover areas that are prone to Holi colours with plastic sheets.
