11 Types of Four Poster Bed Designs for Your Bedroom

1. Plain Wood Four Poster

Alright, so the first is just plain wood. Four straight posts, perhaps a top frame, nothing too special. Some paint it white, some leave it brown. I find it looks warm if the wood is dark and snug. It's the type of modern four poster beds that just sit and don't overdo it. You can use any bedding you like, colourful, plain, whatever; it still looks good. Children could even string up a little string of fairy lights if they wish. Simple, traditional, you can never do anything wrong.

2. Slim Metal Frame

This one is light, really light compared to wood. Black metal, white metal, sometimes silver. The posts are thin; you can see through them a little. It doesn’t block the room at all. Some people hang curtains, some don’t. It’s neat, simple, and modern. If your ceiling is low, this one works better than big chunky wood. I think it also looks kind of elegant because it’s just straight lines, no fuss.

3. Canopy Draped Bed

Ah, the dreamy one. You can hang curtains on all four sides. Sheer fabric, maybe colored, maybe white. You can tie them back or leave them hanging. At night, it feels like a private little corner just for you. Kids love this because it’s like a tent. Adults love it too because it makes the bed feel special, like a little castle. Many luxury four poster bed ideas show this style. I think it’s romantic, cosy, and a little fun too.

4. Floating Frame

This is somewhat unusual. The modern four poster beds have a frame, but the top seems to be floating slightly above. Light, contemporary, not heavy in any way. Some add LED strips on them, so in the evening the bed softly glows. I like it because it's contemporary and unique, but still plain. You don't see this in most homes, so it stands out.

5. Upholstered Headboard

Here, the headboard and sometimes posts are covered in soft fabric. Velvet, linen, cotton, anything soft. When you lean back, it’s comfy. Feels rich, looks modern. Contemporary four poster bed designs often use this style. I think it works well if you read in bed or sit up with coffee. Makes the bedroom feel more comfortable. Some people put pillows that match the fabric, and it looks very well-together.

6. Rustic Chunky Wood

This is solid and large. Thick wooden supports, occasionally with a rough surface, occasionally even with bare edges. It's heavy, but it lasts forever. It feels natural, like you're in a cottage or farmhouse. Small rooms may be claustrophobic with this one. Put on cotton sheets, quilts, maybe some plain curtains; it's warm and homely. Wooden four poster beds such as this feel old-fashioned but not dull. I think people enjoy them because they feel earthy.

7. Carved Classic

Old-fashioned but not tacky. The posts do have decorations, spirals, flowers, and perhaps carvings on the headboard. It's regal, palace-like. Heavy wood, must have a large bedroom. Some think it's overkill, others adore it. Most likes for luxury four poster beds still incorporate carved ones. It's elegant, it's dramatic, you see it the moment you walk into the room. Not sleek modern, but extremely classy.

8. Glass and Metal

This one is odd. Its posts are metal, perhaps black or gold, and some of them have glass panels. The glass reflects light and sparkles slightly. Looks classy, tidy, contemporary. Not everyone would approve because it's striking. But under a sunny bedroom window, it's stunning. Looks delicate, perhaps, but trendy. Contemporary four poster beds need not be entirely wood or textile, and this demonstrates that.

9. Low Post

Tall posts don't always work. This one has them at a short height, just over the mattress. Still are modern four poster beds, just minimalist. Doesn't overwhelm the room, which is good if you have a low ceiling. Kids could go around it with no problem. Easy to decorate as well. Some find it adorable, others may find it dull. I find it plain but effective.

10. Industrial Pipes

Okay, this one is going to be edgy. Black metal pipes, at times blended with recycled wood. Harsh finish, sort of raw. Suitable for lofts or bedrooms with brick walls. Has a strong, urban feel, not soft or warm. You can have little lights or drapes if you prefer, but the pipes already add character. Those who prefer loft-type or contemporary urban interiors choose this. Much different from simple wood, that's for certain.

11. White Minimalist

Pure white, neat, matte or glossy. Makes the bedroom look larger. Extremely relaxing. Add some colourful pillows or sheets if you want to colour them. Minimalists adore this. Easy to accessorise around it. White modern four poster beds are effortless yet dramatic without being too dramatic. Also looks new in compact rooms.
