Easy & Simple Maintenance Tips For uPVC Windows

No matter how expensive your uPVC windows are, if they look dirty or worn out, it affects the entire look of your space. Dust, rain, rust, and direct sun can make even a brand-new window look dull in just a few months.

With these 5 easy & simple maintenance tips for uPVC windows, you can keep them working smoothly for years in Indian conditions with better insulation and without high maintenance costs.

Keep your uPVC windows clean

The most basic way to extend your window’s life is regular cleaning. Here’s how to clean uPVC windows. (Step-by-step).

What you will need:

• Mild dish soap
• Warm water
• Microfibre cloths or soft sponges
• Soft-bristle brush (for textured areas)
• Squeegee or lint-free cloth (for drying)

Cleaning uPVC windows:

• Brush off the dust and lose the dirt first.
• Mix warm water with a little dish soap.
• Gently scrub the frames in circular motions.
• Focus on corners where grime builds up.
• For the glass, use the same soapy mix and then rinse with clean water.
• Dry the frame and glass, using a squeegee or lint-free cloth to avoid water spots.
• For tougher stains or slight yellowing of frames, use a vinegar-water mix or a specialised uPVC cleaner.

Avoid:

• Cleaning uPVC windows under direct sunlight should be avoided, as it causes streaks. Clean on a cloudy day.
• Make sure not to scrub harshly.
• Never use steel wool or abrasive pads, as they only damage the surface and affect the shine.

• Do not use strong acidic or bleach-based cleaners. They damage the frame finish and reduce weather protection.

Keep hardware and moving parts in top condition

Even if your windows are opening fine now, they can get stiff over time. Dust and moisture can slowly make the moving parts harder to operate and eventually cause damage.

Monthly checks:

• Open and close each window to test movement.
• Make sure locks click in place and handles move without force.
• Look for rust or loose screws.

Lubrication tips:

• Every 6 months, use light machine oil (like WD-40) or silicone spray on hinges, locks, sliders, and handles.
• Wipe off excess to avoid dirt sticking.
• Some uPVC windows have a “winter mode”. You can use an Allen key to slightly tighten the sash during colder months for better insulation.

These small steps can extend the life of your hardware and give you long-lasting windows with zero squeaks or jams.

Maintain and replace weather seals

The rubber or plastic strips (gaskets) around your windows keep out dust, wind, rain and noise. If they shrink, crack or harden, your windows will no longer be airtight.

How to inspect?

• Every 3 months, run your hand along the seals.
• Look for cracks, dryness, or gaps, especially at the corners and bottom edge.
• Do a candle test: hold a lit candle near the seal. If the flame flickers, air is leaking.

How to maintain weatherproof windows?

• Clean the seals with soapy water and a soft cloth.
• Use silicone-based spray to keep them soft and flexible.
• Avoid using petroleum-based oils, as they weaken rubber.

Pro tip: Replace seals as soon as you see damage. Good sealing keeps your window airtight, energy-efficient, and long-lasting.

Ensure proper drainage system function

uPVC windows have drainage holes at the bottom to let out rainwater. When these get blocked with dirt, leaves, or debris, the water can collect inside the frame and damage the seals.

Drainage maintenance:

• Locate the drainage slots on the bottom of the frame.
• Use a pipe cleaner or cable tie to remove debris.
• Pour water to check if it flows out freely.

Sill care tips:

• Clean the sills regularly.
• Make sure they slope outward, not inward.
• Wipe away any standing water after rain.

Blocked drainage is one of the top reasons why weatherproof windows don’t work. Do these checks every 4 to 6 months to avoid bigger problems later.

Conduct seasonal deep maintenance

Apart from routine cleaning, a little extra care during season changes will help you stay ahead of wear and tear.

Spring:

• Wipe off winter grime and salt (especially in coastal or hilly regions).
• Tighten any loose hardware.
• Clean drainage slots before pre-monsoon showers.

Summer:

• Check for heat-induced warping or expansion.
• Make sure seals haven’t loosened.

Autumn:

• Remove dry leaves and debris from sills and drainage slots.
• Clean and re-lubricate all hardware.

Monsoon:

• Test weather seals
• Clear any debris near the window base
• Ensure proper drainage

Winter:

• Don’t force windows open if they are stuck. Wait for the sun to warm them.
• Check for ice damage on seals and frames.
• Use winter mode if your windows support it.

Pro tip:

Condensation forms when warm indoor air touches a cold window surface, especially during winter or monsoons. If ignored, it can lead to mold or damage the window seals. To prevent this, keep the windows open for at least 10 to 15 minutes to let the moist air out, use exhaust fans, and avoid drying clothes inside.

These simple seasonal actions root for long-lasting windows which don’t need repairs every year.
